Small in stature but big in personality, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi takes center stage in the third illustration of my Inktober 2026: Lexicon Lands art challenge!

This black-and-white and grayscale illustration captures the distinctive charm of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, featuring its large upright ears, expressive eyes, short legs, and elongated body. The seated pose highlights the breed's recognizable appearance while giving the artwork a calm, attentive personality.

The Creative Process

I began this drawing with a mechanical pencil, carefully sketching the Corgi's proportions and refining the details using a kneaded eraser.

Next, I used ink and a dip pen to establish the outlines, facial features, and smaller details. With a watercolor brush, I developed the grayscale shading, creating contrast between the Corgi's darker coat markings and lighter areas.

Finally, I used an acrylic paint pen to add outlines and highlights, emphasizing the ears, face, and body. These finishing touches help the illustration stand out while preserving its traditional hand-drawn appearance.

The natural paper texture remains visible, adding depth and character to the finished artwork.

For Inktober 2026, I'm embarking on an alphabetical artistic journey through the world of dog breeds with my Lexicon Lands collection.

The challenge features 26 different dog breeds, beginning with the Akita for A and continuing through the alphabet to the Zerdava for Z. A special 27th illustration features Valor the Swiss Shepherd.
