A Spotted Star of Lexicon Lands
Every dog has a story, and few breeds are as instantly recognizable as the Dalmatian!
Introducing D Is for Dalmatian, the fourth illustration in my Inktober 2026: Lexicon Lands collection, an A–Z artistic journey celebrating 26 unique dog breeds through traditional black-and-white artwork.
This hand-drawn illustration features a Dalmatian sitting proudly, with its head facing forward, expressive eyes, floppy ears, and signature spotted coat. The combination of carefully placed black spots, delicate grey shading, and fine ink outlines brings depth and personality to this classic canine.
I created this illustration using a combination of traditional drawing and inking techniques:
Mechanical Pencil: Used for the initial sketch, proportions, and anatomical details.
Kneaded Eraser: Helped refine the sketch and remove unnecessary pencil marks.
Watercolor Brush: Applied the subtle grey tones that create shadows, depth, and dimension.
India Ink: Provided the rich black tones throughout the illustration.
Dip Pen: Used for black-and-white ink details, defining the Dalmatian's distinctive markings and features.
The result is a monochromatic illustration that balances bold contrasts with softer shading, allowing the Dalmatian's natural beauty and personality to shine.
Lexicon Lands is my special theme for Inktober 2026, featuring an alphabetical journey through dog breeds from A to Z.
Each illustration celebrates a different breed, showcasing its unique physical characteristics through traditional drawing techniques.
The Dalmatian represents the letter D, following the Akita, Bull Terrier, and Cardigan Welsh Corgi.
These illustrations are also being developed into a special Lexicon Lands playing-card-inspired art collection, bringing an additional creative dimension to the challenge.
