Earl Meets Barney is a limited-edition fine-art print inspired by Chapter 4 of History of Earl Dewey Fisher, the preserved life story of my great-great-grandfather, Earl Dewey Fisher.
This piece captures young Earl beside Barney, the clever cutting horse who became part of one of Earl's memorable childhood stories.
Earl learned to ride when he was quite young. His first experience on a horse was frightening—his brother lifted him onto a great big horse, and Earl remembered sitting there and crying because he was so small and scared. With time, however, he learned to ride and became accustomed to the quick movements required when riding a cutting horse.
Barney was more than a working horse. He was gentle, intelligent, and full of tricks.
If someone tried climbing onto Barney without a saddle, he would reach around and grab their pant leg, pulling them back down without actually biting them. If someone tried jumping onto him from a wagon or another raised object, Barney would wait patiently—and then step aside at just the right moment.
Barney was also clever enough to untie himself. Earl remembered that he needed to be secured with a double knot, and even a closed barn door wasn't necessarily enough to contain him. If it was fastened with a hook, Barney could use his lips to flip the hook and let himself out.
Earl Meets Barney transforms this small piece of family history into an illustration celebrating Earl's childhood and the unforgettable personality of a very clever horse.

Creating Earl Meets Barney
The original Earl Meets Barney began as an ACEO-sized traditional artwork.
I used Da Vinci Eye as a drawing aid to help trace the initial composition with a mechanical pencil, while artist tape kept the small artwork securely in place.
After completing the remaining sketch details, I used a kneaded eraser to lighten the pencil lines. I then developed the illustration with watercolor pen, India ink pen, and acrylic paint pen, building the colors, outlines, highlights, shadows, and details of Earl, Barney, and their surroundings.
Once the physical artwork was finished, I used Snapseed and Procreate to digitally edit and prepare the image for printing.

Part of The Biography of Earl Dewey Fisher
Earl Meets Barney belongs to my ongoing The Biography of Earl Dewey Fisher art series.
Through this project, I'm illustrating stories from Earl's preserved history, turning memories of his family, childhood, animals, travels, and experiences into individual works of art.
Each piece helps give a visual form to a story that otherwise exists primarily in words.
Earl Meets Barney represents Chapter 4 and accompanies Episode 5: Barney the Cutting Horse.
A Piece of Family History for Your Collection
For me, Earl Meets Barney isn't simply a horse illustration. It's a visual interpretation of a real childhood memory preserved by my great-grandfather.
The contrast between young Earl and the much larger Barney represents those early experiences of learning to ride, while Barney's story adds humor and personality to the memory.
This limited edition offers collectors an opportunity to own a more exclusive version of that story. When the edition is gone, it is gone.
