Inktober 2026: A Is for Akita is the first artwork in my Lexicon Lands A–Z Dog Breed Challenge, a collection of 27 dog drawings created for Inktober 2026.

This piece features a seated Akita Inu illustrated in a striking black, white, and gray palette. Bold India ink linework defines the Akita’s broad face, upright ears, thick coat, powerful build, and characteristic curled tail, while brushed gray tones add depth and contrast.

The original artwork was created traditionally using a mechanical pencil, kneaded eraser, India ink with a dip pen, and a watercolor brush for the gray tones. Acrylic paint was used for the border and signature on the physical original.

After completing the traditional artwork, I used Snapseed for cropping and color correction. I then used Procreate to resize the image and carefully clean stray particles from the background with the Clone tool. The print image is cropped to focus on the Akita itself rather than the border and signature visible on the physical original.

Part of a 27-Piece Series

This is #1 of 27 artworks in Lexicon Lands. Each entry represents another dog breed as the series travels from A through Z, followed by a special 27th drawing featuring Valor the Swiss Shepherd.

These prints are offered as a limited edition, making this first Akita an opportunity to begin collecting the Lexicon Lands series from its very first entry.

Inktober 2026: A Is for Akita is the original hand-created artwork that begins my Lexicon Lands A–Z Dog Breed Challenge for Inktober 2026.

This piece features a seated Akita Inu, illustrated in a limited black, white, and gray palette. I focused on the Akita’s broad face, upright ears, powerful body, thick coat, and tightly curled tail while using a combination of bold ink lines and softer gray tones to give the dog depth and character.

The artwork began with a mechanical pencil and kneaded eraser for the initial drawing. I then used India ink with a dip pen to create the black linework and details. A watercolor brush was used to apply the gray tones throughout the coat, while acrylic paint was used to create the hand-painted border and signature on the original.

Unlike prints made from this piece, this listing is for the one-of-a-kind physical artwork, including its original hand-painted border, signature, and date.

This is #1 of 27 original drawings planned for my Inktober 2026 Lexicon Lands series. The series travels from A to Z through different dog breeds before concluding with a special 27th artwork featuring Valor the Swiss Shepherd.

Inktober 2026: A Is for Akita features a seated Akita Inu rendered in black, white, and gray. This is artwork #1 of my 27-piece Lexicon Lands A–Z Dog Breed Challenge, created for Inktober 2026 using traditional drawing and ink techniques before being digitally prepared for printing.

nktober 2026: A Is for Akita marks the beginning of my 27-piece Lexicon Lands A–Z Dog Breed Challenge for Inktober 2026.

This black, white, and gray illustration features a seated Akita Inu, capturing the breed's powerful build, upright ears, broad face, thick coat, and distinctive curled tail. Bold India ink linework is combined with brushed gray tones to create contrast while retaining the character of the original traditional drawing. Strong ink lines and carefully brushed gray tones bring out the breed’s sturdy build, curled tail, alert expression, and distinctive character.

This artwork combines traditional drawing and ink techniques with light digital finishing. I began with a mechanical pencil and kneaded eraser before creating the black linework with India ink and a dip pen. I used a watercolor brush to build the softer gray tones throughout the Akita’s coat.

After completing the physical artwork, I used Snapseed to crop and color-correct the finished image. I then used Procreate to resize the artwork and its Clone tool to clean up small particles visible in the background.

This Akita is drawing #1 of 27 in my Inktober 2026 series. Most of the upcoming Lexicon Lands drawings will be created six artworks to a sheet, with the complete collection eventually featured together in a slideshow video.
