A wrinkled face, a sturdy build, and a personality full of character!

Meet the English Bulldog, the fifth featured breed in my Inktober 2026: Lexicon Lands art challenge, where I'm illustrating dog breeds from A to Z using traditional drawing and inking techniques.

This original illustration captures the English Bulldog's unmistakable appearance, from its deeply wrinkled forehead and drooping jowls to its broad chest, muscular body, and expressive eyes. Seated in a relaxed pose, this Bulldog brings together strength, charm, and a touch of stubborn personality.

The Artistic Process

I began this artwork with a mechanical pencil, carefully sketching the Bulldog's proportions, facial features, and distinctive wrinkles. A kneaded eraser helped me refine the drawing before moving into the inking process.

To create the grey tones, I applied ink using a watercolor brush, building areas of shadow and contrast throughout the Bulldog's face, body, and legs. I then used a dip pen with black and white ink to define the outlines, emphasize the wrinkles, and add highlights and details.

Finally, I photographed the artwork and edited the digital image using Snapseed and Procreate, refining its presentation while preserving the traditional inkwork and natural texture of the paper.

Part of the Lexicon Lands Collection

This English Bulldog is the letter E in my Inktober 2026: Lexicon Lands series, a collection celebrating 26 dog breeds from A to Z, along with a special wildcard illustration.

Each breed receives its own original illustration, showcasing its unique physical characteristics and personality through black, white, and grey ink.

The artwork will also contribute to my larger Lexicon Lands playing-card-inspired art project.
