No Job Too Big is a limited edition fine art print based on an original ACEO created as part of my ongoing illustrated biography of my great-great-grandfather, Earl Dewey Fisher.
Chapter 5 of Earl’s life story looks back on his parents and the work, discipline, and everyday routines that helped shape his childhood. Earl remembered his father as a small, slim, energetic man who farmed and took whatever other work he could find to support his large family.
One particular sentence became the inspiration for this artwork:
“No job was too big or hard for him to try and do it.”
In No Job Too Big, Earl’s father stands with a shovel among fence posts and open farmland. Rather than illustrating one specific job, the scene represents the determination and physical labor described throughout Earl’s memories.
Other stories in the chapter provide glimpses of this working life—from making sorghum with an old blind horse powering the rollers to gathering wood with teams of horses and remarkably well-trained mules. Earl also remembers his mother raising turkeys and selling them each fall to purchase winter bedding and school clothes for the children.
From a Tiny Original to a Limited Edition Print
The original No Job Too Big is an ACEO, making the physical artwork only 2.5 × 3.5 inches. Despite its miniature size, I used multiple traditional materials to build the illustration.
The original was created using a mechanical pencil, kneaded eraser, colored pencil, India ink pen, fineliner pen, and acrylic paint pen.
After completing the physical ACEO, I edited the image used online with Snapseed and Procreate, preparing the artwork for its digital presentation and print reproduction.
This limited edition gives collectors an opportunity to enjoy the imagery of the miniature original as a fine art print while retaining the historical and personal story behind the piece.
Part of the Earl Dewey Fisher Project
No Job Too Big accompanies Chapter 5 and Episode 6: “Work, Discipline, and Daily Life” of The Biography of Earl Dewey Fisher.
Through this project, I’m combining Earl’s preserved words with new artwork to help bring the experiences of my great-great-grandfather and his family to life for another generation.
