The Kansas River Flood of 1903 is a mixed-media illustration created for Episode 4: Early Memories Near Topeka in my ongoing audiobook series, The Biography of Earl Dewey Fisher. The artwork visualizes one of Earl's earliest childhood memories as he and his siblings stood on the riverbank watching the swollen Kansas River carry an entire house downstream after devastating floods swept through eastern Kansas.
Inspired by Earl's firsthand account of the historic Kansas River Flood of 1903, this piece captures both the awe and uncertainty of witnessing nature's immense power through the eyes of a child. The flooded landscape, drifting debris, and family gathered along the river preserve a remarkable memory that has become part of both Fisher family history and Kansas history.
This artwork was created primarily with colored pencil, using India ink pen to establish the gray values and flowing floodwaters. The composition began with mechanical pencil, refined with a kneaded eraser, bordered with an acrylic paint pen, signed using a fine liner pen, and digitally enhanced in Snapseed.
Whether you're interested in historical artwork, genealogy, Kansas history, or visual storytelling, The Kansas River Flood of 1903 commemorates a true event that shaped both a community and the memories of one young boy whose life story continues to be preserved through art.
