Inktober 2026 – F Is for Flat-Coated Retriever

A Celebration of Elegance, Expression, and Traditional Ink Art

Meet the Flat-Coated Retriever, the sixth featured dog breed in my Inktober 2026 – Lexicon Lands art challenge!

Known for its beautiful flowing coat, friendly personality, and energetic spirit, the Flat-Coated Retriever is a wonderful subject for traditional ink illustration.

For this artwork, I wanted to capture the breed's elegant appearance and gentle expression through a combination of bold black ink, soft grey tones, and carefully placed white highlights.

The Artistic Process

I began this drawing with a mechanical pencil, sketching the Flat-Coated Retriever's proportions, seated posture, and distinctive features. A kneaded eraser helped me refine the initial sketch before moving into the inking process.

To create the different values throughout the illustration, I used a watercolor brush to apply grey-toned ink. These softer shades helped establish the dog's form, particularly around its face, chest, legs, and flowing coat.

Next, I used a dip pen with black and white ink to develop the darker areas, define the fur, and add highlights. The combination of these techniques created a dramatic monochromatic illustration with strong contrast and intricate texture.

For the original physical drawing, I also used an acrylic paint pen to create a border around the artwork.

After completing the traditional artwork, I photographed and digitally edited the image using Snapseed and Procreate to prepare it for display and printing.

The artwork offered in this listing features the Flat-Coated Retriever without the surrounding border, allowing the dog to remain the central focus.
