Inktober 2026 – G Is for German Shepherd: Loyalty, Strength & Courage in Lexicon Lands
The seventh stop on my Inktober 2026 journey through Lexicon Lands brings us to the German Shepherd, a breed celebrated for its intelligence, unwavering loyalty, courage, and versatility.
For the letter G, I created a traditional black-and-white ink illustration featuring a German Shepherd sitting upright, its pointed ears standing tall and its attentive eyes looking directly toward the viewer.
The dog's confident posture reflects the alertness and devotion that have made German Shepherds beloved companions, working dogs, and loyal protectors.
One of my favorite aspects of this illustration is the contrast between the dark markings along the dog's back, its lighter chest and legs, and the carefully detailed fur surrounding its face and neck.
The grayscale shading and expressive ink strokes help give the illustration depth while preserving the traditional appearance of an Inktober drawing.
Like my other Inktober 2026 illustrations, this German Shepherd artwork combines traditional drawing techniques with digital finishing.
I began with a mechanical pencil to establish the dog's proportions, sitting posture, and distinctive features. A kneaded eraser helped refine the initial sketch before I began applying ink.
I then used a watercolor brush to apply grayscale tones with black and white India ink, developing the darker and lighter areas of the dog's coat.
After establishing the grayscale shading, I used an India ink dip pen to strengthen the outlines, add details, and emphasize the German Shepherd's facial features, fur patterns, and paws.
Finally, I used Snapseed and Procreate to make digital adjustments, clean up the photographed artwork, and prepare the illustration for display and printing.
The final product image features a close crop of the German Shepherd, allowing the traditional ink details and textured paper surface to take center stage.

For Inktober 2026, I decided to explore the alphabet through 26 different dog breeds, with one additional wildcard illustration to complete a 27-artwork challenge.
Each letter introduces a different breed, celebrating its unique characteristics through traditional black-and-white artwork.
The German Shepherd represents the letter G and is the seventh illustration in this series.
From the Akita that started the journey to the German Shepherd featured here, each artwork contributes another chapter to the growing world of Lexicon Lands.
This project is also an opportunity for me to experiment with traditional materials, develop my ink techniques, and celebrate the incredible diversity of dogs through art.
