Below the Surface: A Watercolor Dog Artwork from Barker’s of Ruin
Jan 02, 2026

Some moments in a story aren’t about the outcome—they’re about the decision to act.
Below the Surface: A Watercolor Dog Artwork from Barker’s of Ruin captures one of those moments from the world of Barker’s of Ruin: a dog diving beneath the surface, already committed, already moving forward, holding tightly to the 2 of Spades.
In this world, cards aren’t just objects of chance. They represent choices, consequences, and turning points. The 2 of Spades, in particular, carries a quiet weight—risk without spectacle, resolve without certainty. This piece isn’t about what happens next. It’s about the instant when hesitation disappears and the dive begins.
The Meaning of the Dive
Water has always been a powerful setting for moments of transition. Beneath the surface, sound dulls, movement slows, and the outside world fades. That feeling made water the perfect environment for this scene.
The dog isn’t fighting the water or racing toward something dramatic. Instead, the posture is calm, focused, and deliberate. The card is already in hand. The choice has already been made.
This piece explores trust—trust in instinct, in direction, and in the willingness to move forward even when the outcome remains unseen.
Materials & Process
The original artwork was created using traditional watercolor, with the outline drawn in acrylic paint pen. The paint pen provided a strong, confident structure for the figure, while watercolor washes allowed the water itself to feel fluid, layered, and alive.
Blues and teals were chosen to keep the mood contemplative rather than turbulent. Letting pigments bloom and settle naturally helped reinforce the idea of surrendering control once the dive begins.
This balance between defined linework and organic color mirrors the theme of the piece: intention paired with uncertainty.
Aqua January & Creative Exploration
This artwork was created as part of Aqua January, a seasonal art challenge focused on water, motion, and reflection. Aqua January encourages experimentation and process-driven creation, making it an ideal space to explore quieter narrative moments like this one.
Rather than treating the challenge as a prompt checklist, I approach it as a way to slow down, explore mood, and let symbolism guide the artwork where it needs to go.

Whether viewed as part of a larger world or simply as an image about courage and commitment, the artwork invites quiet reflection.
Sometimes the most meaningful moments aren’t loud or dramatic. Sometimes they happen underwater—out of sight—when the choice has already been made.
