Blue Viola Miniature Study — A Floral Miniature for Blooming Marvelous May

Spring art challenges have pushed me to experiment more with miniature compositions, layered textures, and mixed media techniques, and Blue Viola Miniature Study became one of the more expressive floral pieces to come out of that process.

This artwork focuses on a cluster of blue violas surrounded by dense greenery and flowing white contour lines that move throughout the composition. The combination of cool blues, deep greens, and bright highlights creates a high-contrast floral study that feels both decorative and sketchbook-inspired at the same time. Rather than aiming for strict botanical realism, I wanted the piece to embrace expressive linework and layered color textures while still capturing the recognizable shape and softness of violas.

The artwork began with a mechanical pencil sketch and was refined using a kneaded eraser before layering in colored pencil textures and shading. India ink pen details helped define structure and contrast throughout the piece, while acrylic pen highlights created the bold white outlining and energetic visual movement woven across the composition.

One thing I’ve been enjoying throughout Blooming Marvelous May and Miniature May is the challenge of creating visually dense artwork within smaller formats. Miniature artwork forces every line, texture, and color choice to carry more visual weight, which naturally leads to more experimentation with layering and composition. In this piece, the compressed format helped create a more immersive botanical arrangement where the flowers and foliage overlap tightly together.

This artwork is also part of a larger creative push to keep exploring floral themes alongside my usual dog art, fantasy-inspired projects, and mixed media experiments. While many people know my work primarily through dog artwork and the Settlers of Catan-inspired hex series, these floral challenge pieces have become a great way to study color relationships, organic forms, and looser compositional techniques.
