Brick Built Boxer – Strength in Every Stroke
Apr 08, 2026

What happens when a classic board game resource meets bold canine character? In “Brick Built Boxer – Strength of the Wall,” I reimagined the brick resource from Settlers of Catan as a living, breathing presence—embodied through the strength and personality of a Boxer dog.
This piece isn’t just inspired by structure—it is structure. Designed as a Catan-style game piece, the artwork takes the idea of brick—one of the most essential building resources in the game—and gives it a new identity. The Boxer becomes the guardian of that resource, representing durability, resilience, and the foundation of every road, settlement, and city built in gameplay.

From Resource Tile to Living Symbol
In Settlers of Catan, brick is all about expansion. It’s what allows players to build outward, to create connections, and to establish a lasting presence on the board. I wanted to capture that same feeling visually.
The brick wall background isn’t just decorative—it directly reflects the resource itself. The Boxer stands firmly in front of it, grounded and unshaken, symbolizing the reliability players depend on when they’re building their strategy. This transforms the artwork from a simple portrait into something more: a functional concept piece that could exist as a custom hex tile within the game.
The Creative Process Behind the Tile
To bring this idea to life, I used a combination of traditional materials and digital refinement to give the piece both texture and clarity.
Materials used include:
• Acrylic paint pens (POSCA)
• Stuart Semple Super Base White 2.0 acrylic paint
• Protective Mattify Membrane Coat varnish
• Edited with Snapseed & Procreate
The process focused on layering—much like building in Catan itself. Acrylic paint established bold shapes and colors, while the varnish unified the surface. Digital editing allowed for final adjustments, ensuring the piece works both as artwork and as a clean, readable game-inspired design.
A New Way to Experience Catan
This artwork is part of a broader creative idea: turning game mechanics into visual storytelling through dog breeds. Each resource can be reinterpreted through a breed that reflects its role—brick becomes strength, wood becomes growth, wheat becomes abundance, and so on.
By doing this, the game board transforms into something more personal and expressive—where each tile carries both strategic value and artistic meaning.
Bring the Game to Your Wall
Whether you’re a fan of Settlers of Catan, dog art, or both, this piece offers something unique. It captures the feeling of building, strategy, and strength in a way that goes beyond the board.
