Chrysanthemum Miniature Study – A Bold Floral Artwork for Blooming Marvelous May

Flowers have a way of filling a composition with movement, texture, and layered color, and this new Chrysanthemum Miniature Study continues my ongoing exploration of floral-themed artwork during Blooming Marvelous May and Miniature May. This piece focuses on the dense overlapping petals of a chrysanthemum, using bold outlines, saturated pink tones, and textured greens to create a stylized botanical composition with a handcrafted mixed-media look.

The artwork was created using mechanical pencil, kneaded eraser, colored pencils, India ink pen, colorless pencil blender pen, and acrylic paint pens. The chrysanthemum flower itself was primarily built using magenta colored pencil and fuchsia acrylic paint pen, helping create the vivid layered pink tones throughout the petals. After the traditional artwork was completed, I refined the final presentation using Snapseed and Procreate to enhance the colors, contrast, and overall digital display quality for online viewing and prints.

One of the things I enjoyed most while creating this piece was experimenting with how the thick India ink outlines interact with the softer layered colored pencil textures underneath. The combination of magenta and fuchsia tones helped push the flower toward a bold high-contrast palette while still preserving the organic feel of the chrysanthemum petals. Chrysanthemums naturally have an almost abstract structure due to their dense petal formations, which made them especially fun to reinterpret in a more graphic and expressive style.

This miniature artwork is part of my larger series of seasonal floral studies created throughout May. I’ve been using these smaller pieces to experiment with composition, texture, and color combinations while maintaining a strong traditional-art foundation. Each flower offers a different creative challenge, and chrysanthemums in particular create opportunities for layered detail and rhythmic petal shapes.

If you enjoy botanical artwork, floral illustrations, mixed media techniques, or colorful nature-inspired art, this piece is now available as an open edition print in my Art Storefronts gallery.
