Explore the Labrador Wheat Hex Art Print

This piece is part of an ongoing exploration of transforming familiar board game elements into expressive, character-driven artwork. The wheat tile—often associated with growth and sustainability in Catan—felt like the perfect match for a Labrador. Known for their warmth, loyalty, and friendly nature, Labradors naturally embody the same sense of comfort and reliability that the wheat resource represents.

From Game Tile to Living Character

Rather than simply recreating a hex tile, the goal was to bring it to life.

The structured grid in the background echoes the layout of a classic Settlers of Catan board, while the layered acrylic textures give the surface a tactile, almost weathered feel—like a well-played game that carries memories with it. The Labrador stands front and center, smiling, expressive, and full of personality—turning a simple resource tile into something alive.

This is where the piece shifts from inspiration to interpretation. It’s not just about the game—it’s about what the game represents: connection, strategy, and shared experiences.

Materials & Process

This artwork was created using a mix of bold traditional materials and digital refinement:

• Stewart Semple Super Base
• White 2.0 Acrylic Paint
• Posca Acrylic Paint Pens
• Protective Mattifying Membrane Coat Varnish
• Edited digitally with Snapseed & Procreate

The combination of high-contrast acrylics and clean digital touch-ups helps preserve the handcrafted texture while enhancing clarity for print.

Why a Labrador?

Labradors are one of the most beloved dog breeds for a reason. Their friendly demeanor and dependable nature make them a natural symbol of warmth and companionship—qualities that align perfectly with the wheat tile’s role in Catan as a source of steady growth.

In this piece, the Labrador becomes more than just a subject—it becomes a guardian of the harvest, a living embodiment of the land it represents.
