Inktober 2026 – D Is for Dalmatian: A Spotted Star of Lexicon Lands

Continuing my A–Z journey through dog breeds, one ink drawing at a time!

Every dog breed has something that makes it special, and when it comes to recognizable markings, few can compete with the Dalmatian!

For the fourth entry in my Inktober 2026: Lexicon Lands art challenge, I'm featuring the Dalmatian, a breed famous for its distinctive spotted coat, athletic build, and lively personality.

Following my previous drawings of the Akita, Bull Terrier, and Cardigan Welsh Corgi, this illustration continues my journey through the alphabet, celebrating the beauty and individuality of different dog breeds through traditional black-and-white artwork.

Meet the Dalmatian: A Dog Covered in Character

Dalmatians are among the most recognizable dog breeds in the world, thanks to their white coats decorated with black or liver-colored spots.

Historically associated with horse-drawn carriages and firehouses, Dalmatians have earned a reputation for their endurance, intelligence, and energetic personalities.

For this drawing, I wanted to capture the breed's distinctive appearance while giving the dog a calm, attentive expression.

I chose a seated, forward-facing pose that emphasizes the Dalmatian's floppy ears, expressive eyes, broad chest, and naturally occurring spotted markings.

The black spots provide a striking contrast against the white paper, making the Dalmatian an especially interesting subject for an ink-based art challenge.

Behind the Artwork: My Drawing Process

Like the other illustrations in my Lexicon Lands collection, I created this Dalmatian using a combination of traditional art materials and digital editing tools.

I began with a mechanical pencil, sketching the Dalmatian's overall proportions, seated posture, facial features, and distinctive spotted markings.

I used a kneaded eraser to refine the sketch, clean up unnecessary pencil lines, and prepare the illustration for inking.

Next, I incorporated a watercolor brush to apply grey tones, creating subtle shadows and dimension throughout the dog's face, chest, legs, and body.

For the darker details, I used India ink and a dip pen, defining the dog's outline, expressive facial features, and signature black spots.

One of the most interesting parts of this drawing was balancing the black markings with the white areas of the coat while preserving the dog's natural anatomy.

Digital Editing with Snapseed and Procreate

After completing the traditional illustration, I incorporated two digital tools into my creative process:

  • Snapseed: Used as part of my digital photo-editing workflow.

  • Procreate: Used for additional digital adjustments and preparation of the artwork.

These tools helped me bring the traditional drawing into a digital format suitable for sharing online and displaying on my website.

The Finishing Touches

I also used an acrylic paint pen to create the bold black border surrounding the artwork in the version intended for my blog and social media posts.

For my Art Storefronts product listing, I chose to use the borderless version, keeping the focus entirely on the Dalmatian illustration.

The finished piece brings together traditional pencil and ink techniques with modern digital editing, creating another addition to my growing Inktober 2026: Lexicon Lands collection.

A Different Kind of Black-and-White Challenge

Although Dalmatians might seem like obvious subjects for black-and-white illustrations, their spotted coats present an interesting artistic challenge.

Each spot needs to complement the dog's anatomy while maintaining a natural appearance.

Too many dark markings can make the illustration feel crowded, while too few can reduce the breed's recognizable appearance.

I worked to balance the black spots with the lighter areas of the coat, using grey shading to help define the dog's structure.

The finished drawing combines bold ink outlines, detailed markings, and subtle tonal variation.

I especially like how the Dalmatian's face becomes the focal point, with its spotted ears framing its attentive expression.

Continuing the Lexicon Lands Journey

My Inktober 2026 challenge is called Lexicon Lands, an alphabetical journey featuring 26 different dog breeds, along with a special wild-card illustration.

Each letter represents a different breed, giving me the opportunity to explore a wide variety of canine appearances, personalities, and physical characteristics.

So far, the journey has included:

  • A – Akita: A powerful and dignified Japanese breed.

  • B – Bull Terrier: A playful dog with an unmistakable egg-shaped head.

  • C – Cardigan Welsh Corgi: A charming, short-legged herding breed.

  • D – Dalmatian: An athletic and elegant dog covered in distinctive spots.

As the collection grows, I plan to adapt these illustrations into my Lexicon Lands playing-card-inspired artwork, featuring mirrored dog designs and special symbols.

The original full-body illustrations serve as the foundation for these future designs.
