Moroni Appears to Joseph Smith — Painting a Room “Brighter Than Noonday”

What does it look like when light enters a darkened room?

Not sunlight through a window.
Not the warm glow of a candle.

But something described as “brighter than at noonday.”

In Joseph Smith—History 1:30–32, Joseph recorded that during the night, a light began to fill his room — increasing until it became brighter than the midday sun. He described a messenger standing beside his bed, clothed in a robe of “most exquisite whiteness… beyond anything earthly.”

This artwork was created to visually explore that moment.

Establishing Light Before the World

Unlike many traditional art processes, this piece began with the light itself.

Created on blue tone paper, the nighttime atmosphere exists from the very beginning of the process. Instead of building the room first and adding highlights later, Moroni’s radiant presence was established using white India ink before any of the earthly elements were introduced.

This approach allowed the glow to feel intentional — not painted onto brightness, but breaking into darkness.

From there, the surrounding room was built layer by layer around that initial light source.

Mixed Media Process

This original artwork was created using:

• Mechanical Pencil
• Kneaded Eraser
• White India Ink (Pen + Dip Pen + Brush)
• Multiple Colored India Ink Pens
• Acrylic Paint Pens
• Colored Pencils
• Black Acrylic Paint Pen
• Blue Tone Paper

White India ink was used first to establish Moroni’s robe and the radiant space surrounding him.

Acrylic paint pens were then used to lay down the base colors for the interior of the room and Joseph’s clothing. Multiple colored India ink pens were used to deepen shadows and strengthen contrast throughout the environment.

Finally, colored pencil shading added warmth and dimension, and a black acrylic paint pen was used to unify the piece with a bold final outline.

Light Overcoming Darkness

At its core, this artwork centers around contrast:

A quiet room.
A dark night.
And light entering it.

Joseph described a room brighter than noonday — yet the moment itself is calm and still.

This piece reflects that stillness, focusing not on spectacle, but on the quiet presence of light overcoming darkness.
