Pansy Miniature Study – A Bold Floral Miniature for Blooming Marvelous May

There’s something uniquely expressive about pansies. Their layered petals, dramatic markings, and rich natural color patterns almost feel hand-painted before the artwork even begins. For this latest miniature floral study, I wanted to lean into those bold characteristics while experimenting with texture, contrast, and a more energetic composition.

Pansy Miniature Study was created as part of both the Blooming Marvelous May and Miniature May art challenges — ongoing creative projects focused on floral artwork, experimentation, and small-format illustrations. This piece combines traditional media with digital refinement to create a botanical artwork that feels both handcrafted and vibrant.

The artwork was made using mechanical pencil, kneaded eraser, colored pencil, India ink pen, and acrylic paint pen, then edited with Snapseed and Procreate to enhance color depth, texture, and contrast while preserving the original traditional feel of the piece.

The deep reds and dark shadows within the flower became the main focal point of the composition. I wanted the pansy to feel almost glowing against the surrounding greens and earthy tones, creating a miniature artwork that feels dramatic despite its smaller scale. The layered textures from the colored pencil and acrylic paint pen helped give the petals a slightly rough, organic appearance that fits the expressive botanical style I’ve been exploring lately.

One of the things I enjoy most about these miniature floral studies is how they encourage experimentation. Working at a smaller scale changes the way textures, outlines, and color contrasts interact. Every mark becomes more important, and even simple flowers can take on a completely different visual personality through layering and composition choices.

This artwork is now available as an open edition print through The Artistic Shepherd for anyone who enjoys botanical artwork, floral miniatures, and nature-inspired wall decor.
