In the world of Settlers of Catan, the pasture resource is one of growth, life, and steady progression—symbolized by sheep grazing across open land. In Pasturebound Guardian, that simple concept is transformed into something more alive: an Australian Shepherd standing watch over its flock, embodying the very essence of the sheep hex.

Australian Shepherds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and natural herding instincts, making them the perfect representation of this tile. Historically tied to ranch life and herding work, they’ve long been trusted as capable guardians of livestock and land. This piece captures that relationship—between dog, sheep, and pasture—and brings it into the stylized world of a Catan-inspired hex.

From Game Tile to Living Landscape 🎲🌿

What starts as a flat hex becomes a story. The pasture is no longer just a resource—it’s a place. A field. A responsibility.

This artwork is part of my Acrylic April Catan Series, where each resource tile is paired with a dog breed that naturally fits its environment. The Australian Shepherd, positioned within the sheep hex, represents more than just the pasture—it represents stewardship, awareness, and purpose.

The composition focuses on that quiet moment of vigilance: a herding dog not in motion, but in control. Watching. Ready. Present.

Materials & Process – Building the Pasture Layer by Layer 🎨

To bring this hex to life, I used a mix of traditional and digital techniques:

• Stuart Semple Super Base for a strong foundation
• White 2.0 acrylic paint for bold highlights and contrast
• POSCA acrylic paint pens for crisp linework and definition
• Protective mattifying membrane coat varnish to seal the piece
• Final digital refinement using Snapseed and Procreate

Each layer builds toward a clean but textured finish—giving the artwork both a handcrafted feel and a polished presentation.

In gameplay, sheep might seem like a simple resource—but they are essential. They enable development, expansion, and progression. In the same way, the Australian Shepherd represents the quiet force behind that progress: the one that keeps everything moving smoothly.
