Purple Aster Miniature Study – A Bold Botanical Artwork for Blooming Marvelous May
May 14, 2026

Purple flowers, layered greenery, and expressive textures come together in Purple Aster Miniature Study, a vibrant new floral artwork created as part of my ongoing Blooming Marvelous May and Miniature May creative projects. This piece explores the dense, lively feeling of a flourishing flower bed while experimenting with bold outlines, overlapping shapes, and energetic botanical color palettes.
The artwork was first created traditionally using mechanical pencil, kneaded eraser, colored pencil, India ink pen, and acrylic paint pen. After the physical artwork was completed, I refined the image digitally using Snapseed and Procreate to enhance the contrast, color depth, and presentation while still preserving the handmade textures of the original drawing.
One of the things I enjoyed most about creating this piece was leaning into the layered composition. Instead of focusing on a single isolated flower, I wanted the asters and foliage to feel intertwined and immersive — almost like looking directly into a crowded patch of blooming flowers. The deep greens, rich purples, and bright highlights helped give the piece a more expressive and stylized look while still maintaining a botanical inspiration.
This floral miniature continues the ongoing experimentation happening throughout my May art challenges, where I’ve been creating smaller botanical studies and exploring new combinations of traditional and digital media. Each piece becomes a way to test different textures, color interactions, and visual rhythms while building a growing collection of flower-inspired artwork.
