Sunflower Miniature Study – A Bold Botanical Artwork for Blooming Marvelous May
May 14, 2026
Sunflowers have always carried a strong visual presence — bold shapes, radiant petals, and a natural warmth that immediately draws attention. For this piece, I wanted to capture that energy in a compact miniature format while leaning into strong outlines, layered textures, and vibrant color contrast.
Sunflower Miniature Study was created as part of my ongoing participation in the Blooming Marvelous May and Miniature May art challenges, where I’ve been exploring floral artwork through smaller-scale compositions and mixed media experimentation. Even at a reduced size, I wanted the artwork to feel expressive and full of movement.
The piece began with a traditional sketch using a mechanical pencil and kneaded eraser before being developed with colored pencil layering, India ink pen linework, and acrylic paint pen highlights. After the physical artwork was complete, I refined the final presentation digitally using Snapseed and Procreate to enhance contrast, sharpen details, and balance the color tones.
One of my favorite parts of this piece is the heavy black outlining around the petals and leaves. It gives the sunflower a stained-glass-inspired appearance while helping the bright yellows stand out against the deep green background. The layered textures and visible media grain also help preserve the traditional hand-drawn feel even after digital editing.
This artwork continues my recent focus on floral and botanical studies alongside my dog artwork, fantasy-inspired projects, and seasonal art collections. Working on miniature flower pieces has been a great way to experiment with composition, color relationships, and texture in a more compact format.
If you enjoy botanical artwork, floral illustrations, or mixed media miniature art, this sunflower study is now available as an open edition print in my Art Storefronts gallery.
