The Steadfast Drever: Continuing My Dogust 2026 Journey With a Swedish Hound

My Dogust 2026 journey continues with another breed added to the collection: the Drever. My newest finished piece, The Steadfast Drever, is a mixed-media portrait featuring the breed’s distinctive long ears, expressive face, and warm brown-and-white coloring against a deep blue background.

I completed The Steadfast Drever on August 27, 2026, continuing my goal of exploring a wide variety of dogs through artwork during Dogust. With every drawing, I have an opportunity to focus on a different combination of shapes, markings, expressions, and breed characteristics, and the Drever gave me another unique subject to interpret in my style.

Capturing the Drever

For this portrait, I wanted the Drever’s face to immediately command attention.

The long, hanging ears frame the head on both sides, while the dog’s eyes and slightly lowered expression give the portrait a calm but determined quality. That expression ultimately inspired the title The Steadfast Drever.

I also wanted to create a strong contrast between the dog and its surroundings. The rich brown areas of the coat are paired with bright whites, darker outlines, and smaller gray details. Behind the dog, I used a deep blue background that helps the warmer colors of the Drever stand out.

Rather than creating an elaborate environment around the dog, I kept the composition focused on the portrait itself. This allows the Drever and its expression to remain the center of the artwork.

Creating The Steadfast Drever

I created this drawing through several stages using both traditional and digital tools.

My materials for The Steadfast Drever included:

  • Mechanical pencil
  • Kneaded eraser
  • India ink pen
  • Fineliner pen
  • Watercolor pen
  • Acrylic paint pen

I began with the drawing stage using mechanical pencil, gradually establishing the proportions and important features of the Drever. The kneaded eraser helped me reduce and clean up the graphite as I prepared the artwork for the additional media.

From there, I incorporated ink, watercolor, and acrylic paint pen to develop the finished appearance. The darker ink work helped define the facial features and coat, while watercolor introduced the browns and other areas of color. Acrylic paint pen provided additional details and highlights that helped finish the portrait.

Once the traditional artwork was complete, I used Snapseed and Procreate to edit and prepare the final digital presentation.

Why “The Steadfast Drever”?

Naming each finished artwork gives me another opportunity to think about the personality conveyed by the portrait.

For this piece, steadfast seemed to fit.

There is something determined about the Drever’s expression in the finished drawing. The dog appears calm and composed while looking directly outward, creating a portrait that feels quietly confident rather than energetic or playful.

That expression became one of my favorite elements of the finished artwork and ultimately gave the piece its name.

Another Breed Joins Dogust 2026

One of the things I enjoy about Dogust is that it gives me a reason to explore breeds that I might not normally feature as often in my artwork.

The Drever adds another distinctive hound to this growing collection and gives me the chance to celebrate a breed with a very recognizable appearance.

Dogust is also becoming a record of experimentation with my mixed-media process. Although the individual dogs share a connection through the overall challenge, each portrait develops its own personality based on the breed, reference, colors, materials, and decisions I make while creating it.

The Steadfast Drever now takes its place alongside the other dogs I've completed for the challenge, and there are still more breeds and drawings to come.

Continuing the Dogust Journey

Every completed portrait brings my Dogust 2026 collection another step forward.

From familiar breeds to dogs that don't appear as frequently in artwork, I want this challenge to celebrate just how much variety exists within the canine world. Different ear shapes, coat patterns, proportions, expressions, and personalities mean that every new drawing presents its own artistic challenges.

With The Steadfast Drever complete, I'm ready to continue working through the remaining dogs and see how the collection develops.

There are plenty more dogs still waiting for their turn on the page.
