Violet Miniature Study – A Bold Botanical Miniature for Blooming Marvelous May

Floral artwork continues to be one of my favorite ways to experiment with color, texture, and layered mixed-media techniques, and Violet Miniature Study became a great opportunity to combine all of those elements into a compact botanical composition. This piece features stylized yellow violets surrounded by dark textured shading and expressive linework, creating a strong contrast between softness and depth. Even in a small format, I wanted the flowers to feel vibrant, glowing, and full of personality.

For this artwork, I used a combination of mechanical pencil, kneaded eraser, colored pencil, India ink pen, and acrylic paint pen before refining the final presentation digitally with Snapseed and Procreate. The traditional materials gave the flowers their hand-drawn texture and layered appearance, while the digital edits helped enhance contrast, sharpen details, and unify the overall composition. The bold outlines and subtle white highlights help the petals stand out against the darker background textures, giving the miniature piece a stylized botanical feel.

This artwork is part of my ongoing participation in the Blooming Marvelous May and Miniature May art challenges. Both challenges encourage experimentation through small-scale artwork and floral subjects, making them a perfect fit for these botanical miniature studies. Throughout the month, I’ve been creating a growing collection of flower-inspired artworks using mixed traditional and digital workflows, each exploring different flowers, color palettes, and visual moods.

One aspect I particularly enjoyed while creating Violet Miniature Study was balancing the simplicity of the flower shapes with the more textured and abstract background. The darker layered shading surrounding the flowers creates a dramatic contrast that helps draw attention toward the petals and focal points. I also liked allowing some sketch-like qualities to remain visible instead of overly polishing the piece, helping preserve the handmade feel of the artwork.

If you enjoy botanical art, floral illustration, miniature artwork, or mixed-media experimentation, this piece is now available as an open edition print through my Art Storefronts gallery.
