Wading Forward — A Watercolor Study of Quiet Endurance

Some moments aren’t dramatic.
They don’t rush, and they don’t demand attention.
They simply continue.

Wading Forward captures a Bernese Mountain Dog moving steadily through a cold stream—head lowered, paws braced against the current. It’s a simple act, but one that carries weight: persistence without urgency, strength without spectacle.

This piece was created using traditional watercolor techniques, with salt applied to wet pigment to form organic textures in the flowing water. The irregular patterns created by the salt help suggest movement, resistance, and depth—elements that can’t be fully controlled, only guided. An acrylic paint pen border was added to frame the scene, giving structure without overpowering the looseness of the watercolor.

Rather than depicting motion as speed, Wading Forward focuses on effort. Progress here is slow and deliberate. It’s about continuing even when every step pushes back.

Watching the piece come together reveals how the salt interacts with the watercolor in real time—spreading, separating pigment, and creating textures that echo the unpredictability of moving water.
