The Asiatic lily is a flower that refuses to be ignored. With its brilliant colors, dramatic petals, and striking presence, it has become a favorite in gardens around the world. For my Asiatic Lily Miniature Study, I wanted to capture that same energy and beauty within a small, detailed artwork created for both Blooming Marvelous May and Miniature May.

This piece began as a traditional drawing using a mechanical pencil and kneaded eraser to establish the structure and shape of the flower. From there, I layered colored pencil to build rich reds, pinks, and greens while using India ink pens to strengthen details and create contrast. Finally, acrylic paint pens were used to add highlights and bright accents that help the lily stand out against the surrounding foliage. After the artwork was completed, I used Snapseed and Procreate to prepare the final image for presentation online.

One of the things I enjoy most about creating miniature artwork is the challenge of fitting a large amount of visual information into a small space. Asiatic lilies are known for their broad petals and bold colors, making them an excellent subject for this type of study. The miniature format encouraged me to focus on the essential shapes and colors that make the flower instantly recognizable while still preserving the intricate details that reward closer inspection.

The vibrant reds and pinks of the bloom create a strong focal point, while the surrounding greens help frame the flower and provide contrast. I also incorporated bright highlights to emphasize the texture and curvature of the petals, giving the piece a sense of depth despite its compact size. My goal was to create an artwork that feels energetic and lively while celebrating the natural beauty of this remarkable flower.

This miniature study joins a growing collection of floral artworks created throughout May. Each flower in the series offers its own unique shapes, colors, and challenges, allowing me to explore a wide variety of botanical subjects while continuing to develop my mixed-media techniques. Together, these artworks form a colorful celebration of nature's diversity and beauty.
