Bearded Iris Miniature Study – Capturing a Garden Classic in Mixed Media
Jun 18, 2026

The bearded iris is one of the most recognizable and beloved flowers found in gardens around the world. Known for its striking petals, bold colors, and elegant structure, it has long been a favorite subject for artists and gardeners alike. My artwork, Bearded Iris Miniature Study, was created to celebrate the beauty and character of this remarkable bloom as part of both the Blooming Marvelous May and Miniature May art challenges.
Finding Beauty in a Single Bloom
One of the goals of the Miniature May challenge was to focus on small subjects and explore their details in a limited space. The bearded iris proved to be an excellent choice because of its distinctive shape and layered petals. Even in a miniature format, the flower offers countless opportunities to study texture, form, and color.
For this piece, I emphasized the deep blues and violets of the iris while surrounding it with expressive green foliage. Bold outlines help define the flower's unique silhouette, while textured shading and highlights bring dimension to the petals. The result is a stylized botanical study that balances observation with artistic interpretation.
Traditional Techniques and Mixed Media
Like the other artworks in my Blooming Marvelous May collection, this piece was created using a combination of traditional art materials. The artwork began with a mechanical pencil sketch, allowing me to establish the overall structure of the flower. A kneaded eraser helped refine the drawing before color and linework were added.
The finished piece incorporates colored pencil, India ink pen, and acrylic paint pen to create rich contrasts and vibrant color. After completing the traditional artwork, I used Snapseed and Procreate for minor digital refinements that enhanced the final presentation while preserving the handmade nature of the original piece.

Part of Blooming Marvelous May
The Blooming Marvelous May challenge gave me the opportunity to create a diverse collection of floral artwork throughout the month. Each flower offered a unique set of colors, shapes, and artistic challenges. The bearded iris stood out because of its dramatic form and rich color palette, making it one of the most visually striking subjects in the series.
Creating miniature studies also encouraged me to focus on the essential characteristics of each flower. Rather than capturing every detail, I aimed to highlight the features that make the bearded iris instantly recognizable and visually engaging.
Bringing Nature Indoors
Botanical artwork has a timeless appeal because it allows us to enjoy the beauty of nature year-round. Whether displayed in a home, office, studio, or garden room, floral art can add color, warmth, and a connection to the natural world.
The bearded iris has long been associated with wisdom, hope, and admiration, making it a meaningful subject for collectors who appreciate both flowers and fine art. Its vibrant colors and elegant structure make it a natural focal point wherever it is displayed.
