Inktober 2026 – H Is for Hamilton Hound: A Swedish Hound Joins Lexicon Lands

The eighth letter of my Inktober 2026 journey brings us to Sweden, where a distinctive hunting dog becomes the latest subject of my traditional ink artwork.

Welcome back to Inktober 2026: Lexicon Lands, my alphabetical art challenge celebrating dog breeds from A to Z!

After completing my German Shepherd illustration for letter G, I'm continuing the journey with H Is for Hamilton Hound, featuring a breed known for its athletic appearance, expressive features, and distinctive tricolor coat.

This latest illustration combines traditional India ink techniques with digital finishing touches, continuing the visual style I've been developing throughout this year's Inktober challenge.

Meet the Hamilton Hound

The Hamilton Hound, also known as the Hamiltonstövare, is a Swedish scent hound originally developed for hunting hare and fox.

Named after Count Adolf Patrick Hamilton, who played an important role in developing the breed, the Hamilton Hound is recognized for its balanced proportions, long hanging ears, and striking combination of black, tan, and white markings.

For my Inktober interpretation, I translated these distinctive features into shades of black, white, and grey.

Rather than relying on the breed's natural colors, I focused on contrast, texture, and the recognizable arrangement of its markings.

Creating My Hamilton Hound Illustration

Like my previous Lexicon Lands illustrations, this artwork began with a traditional pencil sketch.

I used several familiar art supplies throughout the drawing process:

  • Mechanical pencil to establish the initial sketch and proportions.

  • Kneaded eraser to refine the drawing and lighten unnecessary pencil marks.

  • Black and white India ink with a dip pen to establish details and contrast.

  • Watercolor brush to apply grey ink tones and create variations in shading.

  • Acrylic paint pen to complete the artwork's border.

  • Snapseed and Procreate for digital adjustments and final presentation.

One of my favorite aspects of working with ink is finding ways to create depth without relying on a full range of colors.

For this Hamilton Hound, the darker markings across the back and shoulders contrast with the lighter areas of the face, chest, and legs.

The grey tones help connect these areas while preserving the traditional black-and-white appearance of the Inktober collection.

I also paid attention to the dog's facial features and long ears, which contribute to the breed's recognizable appearance.

Watch the Hamilton Hound Drawing Process

Unlike some of my recent Inktober illustrations, I recorded the creation of this Hamilton Hound!

I turned the footage into a YouTube Short featuring the drawing process set to music.

Watching an illustration develop from its early stages into the finished artwork offers a different perspective on the time and detail involved.

The Lexicon Lands Collection Continues

My Inktober 2026 challenge, Lexicon Lands, explores a different dog breed for each letter of the alphabet.

So far, the journey has included:

  • A – Akita

  • B – Bull Terrier

  • C – Cardigan Welsh Corgi

  • D – Dalmatian

  • E – English Bulldog

  • F – Flat-Coated Retriever

  • G – German Shepherd

  • H – Hamilton Hound

Each illustration has its own personality, from the compact build of the English Bulldog to the elegant silhouette of the Flat-Coated Retriever.

The Hamilton Hound adds another distinctive breed to this growing collection.

A Note About the Original Artwork

For this year's challenge, I've organized most of my traditional illustrations into larger sheets containing six dog breed drawings.

The letters A and Z, along with the special wild-letter entry, are exceptions and receive their own standalone drawings.

This means that while individual art prints are available for each breed, the Hamilton Hound original is part of a larger multi-breed sheet rather than being offered as a separate original artwork.

This approach allows me to build a connected collection while still making each breed available individually as a print.

What's Next in Lexicon Lands?

With letter H completed, my alphabetical Inktober journey continues toward I Is for Irish Wolfhound!

The Irish Wolfhound will bring a very different silhouette to the series, with its towering proportions and characteristic rough coat.

I'm looking forward to exploring how those features translate into traditional ink.

Thank you for following along with my Inktober 2026 adventure!

Whether you're here for the artwork, the dog breeds, or the creative process, I appreciate your support as Lexicon Lands continues to grow.

Until next time, keep creating!
