Drawlloween 2026: Werewolf Shepherd – A Howl Beneath the Halloween Moon

By Justyn Simon | The Artistic Shepherd | October 30, 2026

What happens when the strength and loyalty of a shepherd dog meet the supernatural mystery of Halloween?

For my Drawlloween 2026 art challenge, I decided to explore that question with Werewolf Shepherd, an original digital illustration featuring a fearsome wolf-like creature standing beneath an enormous golden moon.

Surrounded by twisted trees, flying bats, a mysterious gothic castle, and eerie blue mist, this artwork combines my love of canine art with the darker, more fantastical atmosphere of Halloween.

After days of working on the illustration in Procreate, I'm excited to share the finished result!

Bringing the Werewolf Shepherd to Life

The centerpiece of this illustration is a powerful gray-and-white Werewolf Shepherd standing atop rugged, moonlit rocks.

With its piercing blue eye, sharp claws, bared fangs, and thick, wild fur, the creature appears ready to unleash a terrifying howl into the Halloween night.

I wanted the werewolf to feel fierce and intimidating while retaining recognizable canine features.

To accomplish this, I used bold black outlines, angular fur details, electric-blue shadows, and bright yellow highlights to emphasize the creature's supernatural appearance.

The surrounding scenery was just as important as the werewolf itself.

A massive golden moon illuminates the landscape, while a twisted tree stretches across the left side of the composition. In the distance, a gothic castle with glowing windows rises above a mysterious forest. Flying bats, cemetery fences, crimson autumn leaves, and drifting mist complete the spooky environment.

Creating the Artwork in Procreate

Unlike my traditional ink and pencil drawings, Werewolf Shepherd was created entirely digitally using Procreate.

One of the biggest challenges was organizing the many different elements of the scene while maintaining a convincing sense of depth.

The finished illustration contains 21 layers, organized from the foreground to the background, with a final layer reserved for my custom paper texture.

The first layer contains the werewolf and foreground rocks. Layers 2–20 contain the scenery, atmospheric elements, and distant background. Layer 21 provides the finishing texture.

Working with this structure allowed me to build the illustration gradually while controlling the appearance of each part of the landscape.

Creating Depth with Gaussian Blur

One technique I used extensively was Gaussian Blur.

Rather than keeping every element equally sharp, I gradually softened parts of the distant environment to make them appear farther away.

The werewolf and foreground rocks retain their crisp outlines, while distant trees, mountains, and architectural features become softer.

I also used layer masks to prevent the blur from spreading beyond the intended areas. This helped preserve clean transitions between overlapping scenery elements.

Painting the Blue Halloween Fog

Another important part of the artwork was creating the atmospheric mist.

I used a cloud brush in Procreate to paint irregular, natural-looking fog throughout the background.

For the mist, I developed a color system using three shades of blue, along with darker blue underpainting and Alpha Lock to control the coloring.

These techniques helped create variations in the fog while maintaining the mysterious nighttime atmosphere.

Combined with Gaussian Blur, the mist gives the illustration a greater sense of distance.

Adding a Traditional Paper Texture

Although this artwork was created digitally, I wanted the finished illustration to retain some of the character of traditional artwork.

To accomplish this, I created a custom Bristol paper texture brush using a photograph of real Bristol paper.

After preparing the texture and adjusting the brush settings in Procreate, I applied it as the final layer of the illustration.

The texture adds subtle grain to the artwork, particularly in the moon and sky, helping soften the otherwise perfectly smooth appearance of digital coloring.

The Final Touches: Moonlight, Bats, and a Haunted Castle

One of the most dramatic stages of the process was completing the sky.

The enormous golden moon became the main background focal point, contrasting with the deep blues and crimson clouds surrounding it.

I also incorporated multiple bat silhouettes across the sky to reinforce the Halloween theme.

The distant castle, with its tall gothic towers and glowing yellow windows, adds another element of mystery to the scene.

I especially enjoyed seeing how these final background elements transformed the illustration from a detailed werewolf drawing into a complete supernatural landscape.

The finished artwork was completed on October 29, 2026, just in time for Halloween!

Watch the Werewolf Shepherd Drawing Timelapse

To celebrate completing the illustration, I created a YouTube Short showing the drawing process.

The timelapse was recorded using Procreate and edited in LumaFusion for the vertical YouTube Shorts format.
