Dandelion Miniature Study: Finding Beauty in a Familiar Wildflower
Jun 13, 2026

When people think of wildflowers, the dandelion is often one of the first plants that comes to mind. Found in lawns, fields, roadsides, and gardens around the world, it is so common that many people overlook its beauty. For this Dandelion Miniature Study, I wanted to slow down and take a closer look at a flower that often goes unnoticed despite its vibrant color and intricate structure.
Created as part of both Blooming Marvelous May and Miniature May, this artwork challenged me to capture the essence of a dandelion within a small format. Working on miniature pieces encourages careful observation, and I found myself paying close attention to the dense cluster of petals that form the flower head, as well as the surrounding foliage that frames the bloom.
The artwork was created using a combination of traditional and digital techniques. I began with a mechanical pencil sketch and refined the drawing using a kneaded eraser. Colored pencil provided the foundational color, while India ink pen and acrylic paint pen helped define details and add contrast. After the traditional artwork was completed, I edited the image using Snapseed and Procreate to prepare it for presentation and reproduction.
One of the things I enjoy about botanical artwork is the opportunity to celebrate plants that people see every day. While exotic flowers often receive the most attention, common wildflowers can be just as fascinating when viewed up close. The dandelion's bright yellow bloom stands out against the surrounding greenery, creating a striking visual contrast that made it an enjoyable subject to study.
This piece is part of my growing collection of miniature floral artworks created throughout May. Each flower in the series offered a unique challenge, from capturing subtle color variations to simplifying complex forms into a compact composition. Together, these studies serve as a reminder that beauty can be found in both the extraordinary and the ordinary.
Thank you for following along with my Blooming Marvelous May journey. I look forward to sharing more miniature studies and nature-inspired artwork in the future.
