The Watchful Tsvetnaya: A Russian Tsvetnaya Portrait for Dogust 2026
Sep 12, 2026

As I continue working through my Dogust 2026 artwork, I’ve had the opportunity to explore dog breeds with very different appearances, personalities, and histories. One of the latest breeds to join the series is the Russian Tsvetnaya, and the finished artwork is titled The Watchful Tsvetnaya.
For this portrait, I focused on the dog’s alert expression and distinctive appearance. The way the dog looks off to the side gives the portrait a watchful quality, which ultimately inspired the artwork’s name. Against the textured blue background, the combination of black, white, and warm brown markings helps the dog stand out as the clear focus of the piece.
Creating The Watchful Tsvetnaya
Like several of my other Dogust pieces, The Watchful Tsvetnaya combines multiple traditional art materials with digital editing.
I created the original drawing using a mechanical pencil, kneaded eraser, watercolor pen, India ink pen, and acrylic paint pen. Each material played a different role in building the finished portrait.
The mechanical pencil allowed me to establish the initial shapes and proportions before moving into the darker and more permanent materials. The India ink helped create the strong black areas and bold outlines, while the watercolor pen introduced color and softer variations. I also used an acrylic paint pen for additional highlights and details.
After finishing the traditional artwork, I brought the image into Snapseed and Procreate for digital editing. This allowed me to prepare the finished artwork for its online presentation and fine art print listing.
Continuing My Dogust Journey
One of the things I enjoy about Dogust is the opportunity to create artwork featuring breeds I might not otherwise have chosen for an individual project. Instead of concentrating only on some of the most recognizable breeds, the challenge encourages me to explore a much wider range of dogs.
The Russian Tsvetnaya is a great example of that. Adding it to my Dogust collection gives me another opportunity to expand the variety of breeds represented in my dog artwork.
The Watchful Tsvetnaya now joins pieces such as The Steady Jämthund, The Watchful Dunker, The Steadfast Drever, and The Resolute AmStaff as part of my continuing Dogust 2026 journey. Each portrait has its own personality while still contributing to the larger collection of dog artwork I have been building through the challenge.
From Traditional Artwork to Fine Art Prints
After completing the artwork and its digital editing, I added The Watchful Tsvetnaya to The Artistic Shepherd as an open-edition print.
The listing offers the artwork across several available formats, including fine art paper, photo paper, canvas, metal, wood, greeting cards, and several other products.

I like being able to take a traditional mixed-media drawing and turn it into something that can be enjoyed in different formats. The original marks, textures, colors, and personality of the artwork remain at the center of the piece, while the print options give collectors different ways to display it.
Celebrating Another Dog Breed Through Art
Dog art has always been an important part of what I create at The Artistic Shepherd, and challenges like Dogust give me another reason to keep discovering breeds and experimenting with how I portray them.
With The Watchful Tsvetnaya, I wanted the dog's expression to carry much of the personality of the artwork. The sideways gaze makes it feel as though the dog has noticed something just outside the picture, creating a small sense of story without needing to show what has caught its attention.
That expression, combined with the textured mixed-media approach, made The Watchful Tsvetnaya a distinctive addition to my Dogust collection.
The Dogust Collection Continues
Every completed Dogust drawing adds another breed and another artistic experiment to the larger project. Some pieces give me an opportunity to work with unusual coat patterns, others challenge me with different facial structures, and some simply stand out because of the personality conveyed through the reference.
The Watchful Tsvetnaya adds another chapter to that process.
As I continue creating more dog artwork, I look forward to seeing how the collection develops and how the individual portraits look together as a record of my Dogust 2026 experience.
The Watchful Tsvetnaya is available now as a fine art print through The Artistic Shepherd.
